Bhutan adopted an isolationist policy that discouraged visitors from entering the country for much of the 20th century.
It was only in the early 1970s that the country emerged from its isolation and tourism began to take off in a tentative but gradual way. The world was then able to appreciate the beauty of this land and the culture of its people.
It is a land with a rich and living culture. That is why it is now called "the museum of the world". It is blessed with lush green forests and mountains that are home to a wide variety of flora and fauna.
The Kingdom of Bhutan lies in the folds of the Himalayas. Its total population is between one and two million. They are of various ethnic origins. There are Bhutanese, Nepalese and migrants from other indigenous regions.
The national language is Dzongkha, Buddhism is the dominant religion.
